Race for the Cure

Saturday, May 11 was the Salt Lake City Susan G. Koman 5K "Race for the Cure". I wanted to participate for several reasons not the least of which was that on Mother's Day in 2012 my sister-in-law Barb Anderson passed away from Breast cancer. So it seemed fitting that one year later on Mother's Day weekend I could be involved in this event. I discovered that Ford was one of the sponsors and Laura and I and several gals from my office joined the Larry H. Miller Ford team and walked. We were advised to carpool so Laura and I took TRAX. It was fun to watch as each stop along the TRAX route was full of men, women and children in various pink attire climb on. They were hoping for 15,000 participants, I don't know what the final count was but we joked because at the starting line it was more like a shuffle than a walk because there were soooo many people! We walked with 3 gals from work and a couple of their kids. The weather was fabulous, sunny and warm, but it was early in the day, we caught the trax train at 7:20 am. It took a little over 2 hours to complete, but we were definately going at a leisurely pace. We had makeshift memorials on our back, we determined that NEXT year we would prepare a proper sign to pin on our backs - but we have never been before and were not aware of the traditions. It was a great experience, very sobering to see all the people in their "Survivor" shirts, other's like us with "In Memory" shirts and signs. There is a certain comedic irreverance displayed as well-- Tutu's made of bra's, catchy names of teams walking together, slogans emblazioned across t-shirts, etc. The other nice perk is that I get Vitality points for the effort. (Vitality is a health incentive program that Larry H. Miller Companies endorses). Get an exam, if you're young, get a baseline exam so your doctors will have a comparison in the years to come.

Aloha Awesomeness

Laura is so excited as she spots dozens of sea turtles. Just a bunch more vacation pictures. Some whale watching trip, snorkeling, and how cool is my sister-in-law who goes scuba diving for her 60th birthday?!!!
