Watch your step

So with the help (majority of the work) of Rob and Jill, the deck is no more.

We had to pile the debris in the yard and then move the pile again. Sandy City does bulk clean up twice a year, but you can't put your stuff out until 2 weeks before. So we (Rob, Jill and Karl) moved it again. The footings have since been dug up and hauled away, (Rob and Karl), and new footings poured.

First Pile

Piled neatly at curb in hopes of keeping neighbor complaints to a minimum. Tomorrow cement is being poured under the deck ( it will be usable storage now) and we are extending the cement pad on the side of the house. Not sure when the rest of the construction will begin. We are simultaneously repairing a 30 foot section of deck that blew down, so while cement cures, we'll focus on fence for a week or so.

We have our work cut out...

Before

No pun intended, (cutting the deck away)  but we have to build a new deck this spring. Rob, Jill and Laura started the demo while we were out of town.  It is going to be a BIG job.  The support beam warped and the whole thing was sloping down.  We had a "whiskey barrel" planter on the deck and I had Karl run a sprinkler line to it so I wouldn't have hand water it every day in the brutal heat of the summer.  Little did we know that as the water drained out it would soak the wood support beneath and bend under the weight of the deck.

This is 27 feet by 12 feet, and it's 25 years old, but should have held up a little longer.  I'll keep you posted.
